We at Tri-Lakes Humane Society know that Black Dog and Black Cat Syndrome is a real thing.  It is more difficult to find homes for black cat and dogs than other colors.  These animals are in the shelter longer on average than their more colorful counterparts.

There are a number of reasons for this which have nothing to do with the personality of the animal.

  • Black is a dominant genetic trait so there are more black cats and dogs born.
  • Black Labrador Retrievers are the most popular breed in the United States.
  • A black animal’s features are a little harder to see in a darkened pen or cage
  • Colored animals catch people’s eyes quicker than a black animal

When adopting your next best friend, please be aware that Black Dog and Black Cat Syndrome is real and you may have a tendency to overlook the black dogs and black cats.  Take a second look and make an effort to see ALL of the dogs and cats available.
